In 2010, a Republican political activist group filed a lawsuit that quickly ascended to the Supreme Court. A partisan split among the justices resulted in a 5-to-4 victory for Citizens United—a deceptive name as the organization primarily represents large corporations. This landmark ruling allows major corporations to wield disproportionate political influence by permitting them to spend unlimited amounts of money in support of their preferred candidates and causes.
